The Jian is a double-edged Chinese sword with a double edge. It's the original Chinese sword, preceding its counterpart, the Dao sword. In fact, the Jian has been used for as long as 2500 years. It is referred to as "The Gentleman of Weapons" in traditional Chinese literature.
Chinese Jian were originally akin to bronze double-edged daggers of varied lengths. However, by approximately 500 BC, they had reached their contemporary lengths of around 18 to 31 inches.

Even though the Jian has undergone significant changes of length, balance, and weight over time, its general purpose has stayed the same. It always served as a multipurpose cut and thrust weapon capable of stabbing, as well as making both precise cuts and slashes, rather than specializing in a single type of use.
In modern times, several Chinese martial arts, such as taijiquan, and its practitioners continue to train intensively with jian. Their proficiency in its methods is considered by many to be the pinnacle of their physical representation of kung fu.
